Two weeks after being released from a hospital, Marion Barry was hospitalized again last night, according to spokeswoman LaToya Foster.
Foster didn’t know why Barry had been hospitalized and declined to stay which hospital Barry is in. Last month, the 77-year-old Barry was treated for a blood infection at Howard University Hospital. Foster, who saw Barry last night, described him as “upbeat.”
“He’s got an exceptional amount of drive about him, and he will not allow himself to be defeated, period,” Foster says.
Vince Gray missed Tuesday’s Ward 3 Democrats debate, with one of the group’s leaders saying Gray was visiting an unnamed, ill friend. WUSA9’s Bruce Johnson reports that Gray was visiting Barry, but Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies declined to comment on the friend’s identity.
“The mayor went to visit a friend who is very ill, at that friend’s request,” Thies says.
Update, 11:29 p.m. Barry’s Twitter account, which isn’t always written first-hand by the former mayor, posted these messages late Tuesday night:
I was not rushed to the hospital. I am not seriously ill. I have a urinary tract infection. I will be back.
