Vince Gray says he wasn’t involved in discussions with the U.S. Attorney’s Office that ended with his attorney rejecting a plea deal on his behalf. Not that he’s complaining. In Gray’s telling, top-flight defense attorney Bob Bennett is operating on a sort of standing order to refuse plea offers from U.S. Attorney Ron Machen.

“My attorney—-who’s been with me now for years—-knows where I am,” Gray said on NewsChannel 8’s NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt.

Bennett hasn’t responded to LL’s requests for comment.

Gray said he wasn’t aware of any discussions to hold off on charging him until he leaves office, a deal that would echo the prosecution of Rolex-loving Virginia governor Bob McDonnell (and look where it got him!).

“I’ve left all of this to Bob Bennett,” Gray said. “He’s obviously one of the finest attorneys in the world, certainly in America, and I’ve left all of those discussions to him.”
