Funeral and memorial plans for Marion Barry, whose death was announced early Sunday morning, have yet to be decided. Whatever happens, though, the former Ward 8 councilmember’s supporters promise that it’ll be memorable.
“If it’s for the mayor-for-life, it’s going to be big, it’s going to be paramount, and it’s going to be monumental,” Barry spokeswoman LaToya Foster says.
In a statement, D.C. Council chairman Phil Mendelson said Barry’s body will lie in state, presumably at the Wilson Building. The Post reports that a Barry memorial could be staged at the Verizon Center or the Walter E. Washington convention center.
Other Barry-organized events, like his annual turkey giveaway scheduled for Tuesday at Union Temple Baptist Church, will go on as planned, according to Foster.
“For everything that he wanted, we’re going to see everything through,” she says.
