Muriel Bowser heads to Congress today for meetings with lawmakers. Some of them will be easier to win over than others.
Bowser plans to spend the early afternoon with Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), both of whom have backed District statehood bills. Last year, Carper held the first hearing on statehood in 20 years. But then, Bowser meets with House Speaker John Boehner, whose main contribution to the District has been being the “John” in “John, I’ll give you D.C. abortion.”
This morning, Bowser stayed vague on what she plans to discuss with the congressmen, describing her agenda as sharing “all the good things that are happening in D.C.”
Bowser also plans bring up the District’s most pressing issue with Congress: implementing marijuana legalization.
“Surprisingly, it doesn’t come up a lot for the members of the Congress, but we’ll certainly let them know what our position is,” Bowser says.
