Ward 8 voters will have as many as 16 candidates to choose from in their April 28 special election. Across town, newly elected Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau has already made her pick, endorsing former Muriel Bowser campaign staffer LaRuby May for the seat left open by Marion Barry‘s death.
“I didn’t plan to get involved in the upcoming special election for the vacant Council seat in Ward 8,” Nadeau wrote in a fundraising email yesterday. “But when my friend LaRuby May told me she was going to run, I knew I had to have her back, the way she had mine during my campaign.”
May, who hasn’t been endorsed yet by Bowser, probably won’t win any votes from this cross-town endorsement. Still, Nadeau could shake loose a couple more dollars for May ahead of Saturday’s campaign finance reporting deadline, which should help reveal the chances of the 16 candidates. Nadeau’s endorsement has already given May a small cash boast: Nadeau writes in her email that she’s personally maxed out to May’s campaign with a $500 contribution.
Read’s Nadeau’s endorsement email below:
After spending the past few years on the campaign trail, I didn’t plan to get involved in the upcoming special election for the vacant Council seat in Ward 8. But when my friend LaRuby May told me she was going to run, I knew I had to have her back, the way she had mine during my campaign.
You may know that I have supported women candidates my whole life, often speak to girls about how to get started in community activism at an early age, and have offered campaign advice to countless young women as they began their first campaigns. Through this work, I first met LaRuby and we became fast friends and allies in building a stronger District of Columbia.
LaRuby’s public service has centered on social reform issues like children and families, economic growth, public safety, public policy, education, elderly citizens, returning citizens, health and wellness, environmental policy, and public finance.
I know she’ll make a great partner on the DC Council and I hope you’ll join me in supporting her.
LaRuby has a fundraising deadline this week. I have pledged to max out to her campaign with a $500 contribution. Will you make a contribution this week as well?
I promise I won’t keep bugging you about this. But wanted to let you know how you could support an incredibly inspiring friend of mine.
Brianne K. Nadeau
