The Ward 7 race is now even more of a showdown between incumbent Yvette Alexander and friend-turned-foe Vince Gray. In an email to supporters this afternoon, candidate Ed Potillo dropped out of the race, citing health reasons.
Potillo once looked like the most viable challenger to Alexander. But Potillo faded after Gray entered the race, and he’s struggled to keep up with his rivals in fundraising. Alexander and Gray each had more than $50,000 in campaign funds as of March 10; Potillo had a little more than $1,000.
In his email, Potillo cites “accumulating health challenges” for his decision to drop out of the race. Notably, today is also the deadline for candidates to turn in nominating signatures to the D.C. Board of Elections to make the ballot.
Potillo and his campaign didn’t respond to requests for comment.
