After dabbling in the dark arts of dough, part-time caterer Wesley Tahsir-Rodriguez has converted his Latin and Caribbean food business Los Verracos into a bagel-making one. The new venture, Schmear Bagels, will set up shop at the monthly D.C. Meet Market in Logan Circle this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The New Jersey native learned how to make his slow-fermented, hand-rolled, and boiled New York-style bagels after taking a course at Kossar’s Bialys in New York. He currently is baking out of new Park View food incubator EatsPlace. (Side note: Southern food restaurant DC Born & Raised will begin serving dinner at EatsPlace on Oct. 8, while Mason Dixie Biscuit Company begins breakfast and lunch on Oct. 9.)
Beyond this weekend, bagel lovers can place special orders with Schmear Bagels by emailing schmearbagels@gmail.com. Tahsir-Rodriguez is also looking for spaces for future pop-ups.
Here is the menu for this weekend:
Bagel (everything, plain, sesame, poppy seed) : $1.50
Bagel with butter: $2
Bagel with cream cheese: $2
Bagel with sliced nova lox, cream cheese, tomato, red onions, and capers $8
Black and white cookie price: $2
Manhattan Special coffee soda (with half n half): $2
