Surf-pop trio Governess kicked off its June tour last night at the MLK Library for one if its signature basement punk shows, along with Loud Boyz and Heavy Breathing. It was too early, the band said, for their funky signature google-eye dresses, but clothing choices are irrelevant with a sound that good. Playing tracks from its forthcoming debut record, due out this year, the songs sound something like what driving fast through a mountain of mud must be like—thick, heavy, and relentless. However, Governess also lays lilting and lovely harmonies on top of that. If Nico‘s voice was more ethereal than Teutonic over The Velvet Underground‘s sound, it would sound a lot like Governess.
