Lindy West is a shockingly honest writer, so it’s no surprise that her first book, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, feels like an intimate, frank girl-talk session with West herself. It’s a collection of essays about growing up and all the topics that resonate so loudly in her mind that they beg to be shared. While not quite a household name, you can’t have gone on social media without coming across something with West’s stamp on it. Whether it was one of her stories on This American Life, her reproductive-rights activism with the co-creation of #ShoutYourAbortion, her weekly column in The Guardian, or her fierce promotion of body acceptance, West isn’t shy about making herself and her opinions known.
