Not all Los Angeles-area rappers rely on simple funk beats and gangsta lyrics. The Pharcyde, former hiphop break dancers whose latest album, LabCabinCalifornia, comes out this week, are a quintet with four MCs and a DJ whose mix of jazzy beats and humor reflects the best of old- and new-school rap.
