A contortionist at the Kennedy Center? Not quite. But to pianist Boris Berezovsky, “it’s important for concerts to be a bit of a circus.” The latest Russian phenomenon, barely into his 20s when he won the Tchaikovsky competition five years ago, recently told USA Today that, like the late master Vladimir Horowitz, he’s willing to add a little drama to his performances if it’ll keep the audience’s attention. It’s not all sleight of hand; critics have tied themselves in knots praising his playing, and just about everybody agrees with the critic who observed that he’s undoubtedly “a pianist of consequence.” True, there were some complaints when Berezovsky used the score for Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in Chicago last summer; local audiences can judge for themselves when he makes his Washington debut this weekend with the Bolshoi Symphony in a piece that’s at least as familiar: the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor.
