I HAVE SPECIAL memories of old St. John’s (“Soldiering On,” 10/27): Regimental drills on Vermont Avenue with little neighbor kids strutting alongside and Thomas Circle hookers for an audience. Long streetcar rides in heavy, year-round wool (one day per semester allotted for dry cleaning). Learning about democracy in the Catholic high school Model Senate.
We convened in the U.S. Senate Caucus Room. Pat Buchanan led the Gonzaga delegation. I introduced a resolution censuring Sen. Joe McCarthy the same week the real Senate, yards away, debated the same hot issue. “Comsymp! Comsymp! Comsymp!” Buchanan and his cabal chanted, drowning out my bill of particulars against the senator from Wisconsin.
