Best known for film soundtracks such as Quiz Show and Nell, trumpeter Mark Isham‘s first jazz album, Blue Sun, blends sublime atmospherics and modal melodies. As in his film music, Isham creates spacious compositions that enhance the prevailing mood rather than force one upon the listener. Mixing electric instruments and treatments (guitarist David Torn’s subtle tape loops, Doug Lunn’s buoyant fretless bass) with acoustic instruments (Kurt Wortman’s hypnotically linear drumming, Isham’s minimalist trumpet) gives Blue Sun a timeless quality reminiscent of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and, not surprisingly, Brian Eno’s Music for Films. At 8 & 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $18. (202) 337-4141. (Christopher Porter)
