This trip to the 9:30 Club is a sort of homecoming for Matt Sharp, since he spent his teen-age trauma years—which would later provide song material for The Rentals (and his other band, Weezer, of course)—in Northern Virginia. On The Return of the Rentals, a project that also includes Petra Haden (violin) and Rachel Haden (vocals) of LA’s That Dog, Sharp’s Magnetic-Fields-meets-the-Cars retro-pop displays a timely fascination with Moog synthesizers. “Friends of P,” the catchy hit, already has America imitating that sound, singing “bop-bweeeee-dop” along with their car radios. Tracy Bonham opens at 8:45 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 930 F St. NW. $8. (202) 393-0930. (Tina Plottel)
