Ever since the Flaming Lips hit the big time (Beavis and Butthead asked of last year’s hit, “She Don’t Use Jelly,” “Uh, is this like, college rock?”), the Oklahoma quartet has been unavailable to the discerning public. Oh, they’ve toured incessantly, but it’s been with Candlebox and Stone Temple Pilots. Imagine my chagrin when the Lips’ support of Clouds Taste Metallic, the band’s new album of psychedelic-freak folk, was to involve opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Silverchair. The gods were smiling when they canceled that tour and let the Lips headline. Then I realized it was that prankster Loki at work—I work late Tuesday nights. Let me know how the show goes. Apples in Stereo open at 9:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $10. (202) 667-7960. (CP)
