Sacred cows don’t get much more sacred than Mother Teresa. But Christopher Hitchens has butchered the Albanian nun and turned her into beef jerky. In his persuasive new book The Missionary Position: The Ideology of Mother Teresa, Hitchens paints the Nobel Prize winner as a religious demagogue whose social work is useless and ill-conceived. According to Hitchens, Mother Teresa cozies with thuggish dictators, stashes millions in donations instead of spending it on the poor, and glorifies suffering rather than actually relieving it. Watch out for lightning strikes when Hitchens reads at 7 p.m. at Chapters, 1512 K St. NW. FREE. (202) 347-5495. (David Plotz)
