This Saturday marks the 69th anniversary of tenor saxophonist John Coltrane’s birth. In honor of the date, D.C. saxophonist, composer, and publisher Andrew White and his quartet perform a birthday tribute to the master of the tenor, who died of a liver ailment at age 40. The program will feature White’s “Coltrane Concerto,” which White says includes “Coltrane-related themes and the performance of two transcriptions of Coltrane improvisations that I play—the one on Giant Steps and the one on Countdown.” White has transcribed and published 531 Coltrane solos and has been a leading expert on the artist’s work since arranging and conducting a big band tribute to Coltrane at the 1976 Newport Jazz Festival. The concert is at Maryland’s John Addison Concert Hall. For ticket information call (301) 292-2839.
