As hurricane seasons barrels on and most of us give thanks that our homes and livelihoods are far from the shore, the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History hosts an Ocean Festival in celebration of “Coastweek ’95.” The one-day festival centers around the museum’s “Ocean Planet” exhibit, and includes a parade of larger-than-life sea characters, a couple of eco-troubadours, and the chance to help reconstruct a 22-foot-long model of a minke whale skeleton. From 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Museum of Natural History, 10th & Constitution Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 357-2700. (Andrew Webster)
