M O N D A Y

Novelist Anne Beattie bought my grandmother’s house. I’m not telling where it is, because I want it back when she’s done with it. While I used to put on Suzanne Vega and drift through Beattie’s starkly hypnotic prose, now I read even closer, with an eye for familiar details (the attic! I’ve been there!). Of course, Beattie has managed to speak to (some argue, for) a much larger audience that, though lacking such explicit connections, identifies with her deadpan voice and intelligent, restless, emotionally constrained characters. All good stuff, but I keep looking for mentions of that front porch swing. Beattie reads and signs her new novel, Another You, at 7 p.m. at Chapters, 1512 K St. NW. FREE. (202) 347-5495. (DN)
