While there is nothing particularly distinguished about trumpeter Terell Stafford‘s playing, the University of Maryland graduate has the chops to develop a personal tone. On this year’s enjoyable debut, Time to Let Go, Stafford burns like the best of the young lions on hard bop originals like “Qui Qui,” but also rivals Dave Brubeck’s famed altoist Paul Desmond’s “soft is better” style on the standard “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” as well as his own “Why?” Even “Send in the Clowns” is jazzed-up enough to make listeners forget Judy Collins. At 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $16. (202) 337-4141. (CP)
