With the same format as and better material than Veruca Salt, Fuzzy should have broken through last year; it’s not clear if it was the lack of major-label support or of ’70s-hard-rock posturing that held back the Boston quartet. Another Bay Area neo-hardcore quartet, Engine 88, plays music so spare and folksy that it almost sounds like roots-rock, albeit more appealing.
