In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the draft horse Boxer (aka the Soviet worker) is the ultimate sucker. He hauls rocks without complaint from sunup past sunset, believes every word his pig leaders tell him, and then dies miserably, sold to the knacker by Comrade Napoleon. Beasts of burden should have a slightly happier time at Oatlands Plantation’s 11th annual Draft Horse & Mule Day. Teams of animals will pull logs, run a wagon obstacle course, and drag 6,000-pound sleds. Winners get extra hay; losers go to the glue factory (just kidding). From 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Oatlands Plantation, Rte. 15 off Rte. 7, Leesburg. $7. (703) 777-3174. (David Plotz)
