REGARDING EDDIE DEAN’S “O Captain! Our Captain!” (The District Line, 8/18), I have only two points. To relegate Jerry Garcia to a milieu of mediocre guitarists misses the entire point of the Dead. It was never about an individual musician; it was always about group harmony. On a given night that group could jam so rhythmically and intensely that their music bordered on the spiritual. And to insinuate that Deadheads did him in is a little like insinuating that the grandkids’ constant carrying-on downstairs finally caused Grandpa’s stroke. Perhaps Mr. Dean would prefer there were a few more Moby Grape cover bands.
