Sugar Minott’s Breaking Free works better than it has any right to. Backed by longtime studio musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, the 39-year-old Minott lends his soulful timbre to generically phrased and structured “one-drop reggae” compositions with clichéd titles like “Jah Love Is Everlasting” and “Dancehall Fever,” magically transforming them into sparkling melodic gems. With fellow veteran Jamaican vocalist Johnny Osbourne and others at 10 p.m. at the Takoma Park Vendors’ Mall, 300 Vine St., Takoma Park. $20. (301) 608-0746. (Steve Kiviat)
