Duke Ellington’s influence is apparent in such disparate performers as traditionalist trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and modernist pianist Cecil Taylor, making “Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington” an apt title for this exhibition honoring the composer. Culled from the Smithsonian’s vast Ellingtoniana collection, “Category” traces the course of Ellington’s life from his beginnings as an unknown Washingtonian to his ascendancy as the 20th century’s most prolific—and gifted—composer. An interactive video featuring Ellington’s endless stream of famed soloists is included in the exhibit, as are musical scores, concert posters, and photographs spanning Ellington’s life.
