A College Park label, Rain Dog Records, is claiming that its latest release contains the final studio session work of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. The licks appear on Blue Incantation, the new CD from local new age composer/guitarist Sanjay Mishra. Garcia adds electric fills to three of the collection’s 10 tracks. The musicians met when the departed icon’s wife, Deborah Koons Garcia, was producing a film through Greenpeace, where Mishra works. “Jerry had gotten hold of a tape of mine, and I was told that he kept playing it in his car, over and over,” Mishra recalls. “He was very gracious, and he told me after listening to my music that he was shocked that I wasn’t selling millions of records.” Garcia invited Mishra to use the Dead’s studios and engineers, which he did last December. During the band’s last stop in D.C. earlier this summer, Mishra gave Garcia a prototype copy of Incantation, and the two discussed future collaborations. “Jerry told me to keep the CD I had, and that he could wait until the final version came out, but something inside me said, “No, give it to him now,’ ” Mishra says mystically. The finished product arrived at the label’s offices the day Garcia died. Contact Rain Dog Records at (301) 345-6188.
