The Pennsylvania town of Delaware Water Gap has been privy to the considerable talents of John Coates Jr. for some time now, but on his new album, The Trio Sessions, the pianist is joined by a D.C.-based rhythm section. Trio features bassist Paul Langosch and drummer Mike Smith, whose contributions make Coates’ cerebral brand of swing accessible to the feet as well as the mind. The disc includes a relaxed rendition of Miles Davis’ “Freddie Freeloader” as well as the Raskin/Mercer composition “Laura,” which is appropriately broken-hearted yet brimming with spirit. The pedal-sustained left-hand chording that introduces Coates’ original “Priorities” provides a soothing bath of notes before plunging into its bluesy series of playful verses. The trio plays Blues Alley Aug. 21; the disc is available from Pacific Street Records at (800) 742-6023.
