Last Friday, the D.C. Court of Appeals upheld Eydie Whittington’s one-vote victory over Sandy Allen in the Ward 8 D.C. Council election. Allen supporters Florence Smith and Sandra Seegars immediately launched a recall drive to unseat the council’s newest member by distributing a pile of aggressive leaflets. One pictures a bat with the face of Whittington flying over a haunted house and asks, “Were We Tricked or Were We Treated?” Another shows Whittington behind bars because, “She Stole the Election.” Recent attempts to unseat Councilmembers Jack Evans (Ward 2) and Charlene Drew Jarvis (Ward 4) were hopelessly disorganized and ultimately failed, but Smith and Seegars are hoping to feed off of disappointment over Whittington’s victory and performance thus far to gather the approximately 3,700 valid signatures needed by December. Then again, only 4,048 people bothered to vote in the May election.
