He didn’t actually write the song he sang about writing the songs that made the whole world sing, and now Barry Manilow is singing the songs that were written before he was even born. The former jingle cat’s latest tour highlights music from the big band era, as well as samplings from his box set of chart-toppers. Exactly why the reed-thin, reedy-voiced pop star can inspire people to organize into groups like the aptly named Manilow Maniacs of Maryland—whose members are moved to create poems with titles like “The Gift of Barry”—remains elusive, but he obviously isn’t going away.
