One of the first Jamaican dancehall rappers to have his toasting available on record, 53-year-old U-Roy has been entertaining island music fans with his warm, laid-back delivery since the early ’60s. Celebrated primarily for his chart-topping early-’70s collaborations with seminal producer Duke Reid, U-Roy has continued to record; his ’90s efforts include a series of releases produced by U.K. dub mastermind the Mad Professor.
