Scottish folk veteran Dick Gaughan stands out in today’s crowded field of acoustic singer/guitarists. A passionate vocalist with a repertoire of hard-hitting political songs, Gaughan’s no slouch on the fretboard either. Imagine one man combining the guitar chops of Richard Thompson with the leftist/socialist balladeering of a Billy Bragg or a Woody Guthrie. Tonight’s show will be the perfect antidote for those disgusted by a political climate dominated by the likes of Newt Gingrich. At 8:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $15. (703) 549-5919. (Ken Roseman)
