Long before hiphop used countless numbers of his samples for its musical bedrock, composer/bandleader/philosopher George Clinton provoked and thrilled audiences and critics with his frequently seamless meshing of African-American-derived genres. Tonight’s monthly meeting of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections features local music journalist and musician Thomas Stanley, whose lecture “Necessity Is the Mothership of Invention” will, through recordings, video clips, and Stanley’s own insights, explore Clinton’s still-evolving,funky contributions. At 7 p.m. at the Library of Congress’ Mary Pickford Theater, James Madison Building, 1st & Independence Ave. SE. FREE. (202) 707-5049. (Reuben Jackson)
