JULY 29
Last year, District Curators commissioned a project teaming the disparate talents of the Garth Fagan Dance ensemble (pictured), keyboardist/composer Don Pullen, and Montana’s Salish Kootenai tribe. Together they composed Earth Eagle First Circle, a performance piece combining jazz, Native American music, and modern dance. Pullen died soon after the composition was completed, but is represented in Earth Eagle‘s D.C. premiere by his group, the African Brazilian Connection, which, along with the Salish Kootenai’s Chief Cliff Singers, provides the musical backdrop for Fagan’s exhilarating choreography. Selections from Griot in New York, a collaboration between Fagan and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, will also be performed. At 7 p.m. at the Carter Barron Amphitheater, 16th & Colorado Ave. NW. FREE.
