If, like me, you found yourself at the aural mercy of saxophonist Lee Konitz’s inconsistent reconstructions of standards at One Step Down earlier this year, you may approach his latest studio date with understandable skepticism. But while his alto tone isn’t what it used to be (what is?), there is plenty to savor on Rhapsody, most notably the leader’s understated work on the title track (actually the evergreen “I Hear a Rhapsody,” which features a gorgeous vocal contribution from Helen Merrill). Also worth a listen is Konitz’s seamless interaction with tenor Joe Lovano, pianist Peggy Stern, and guitarist Bill Frisell, which recalls the wondrous synergy that occurred when Konitz, Lovano, and Frisell matched wits on a session of standards under drummer Paul Motian’s name.
