If you thought the space shuttle/MIR docking was about as exciting as watching jello congeal, return to the pioneer days of rocketry this weekend at the Goddard Space Flight Center. In memory of its namesake, Robert Goddard (who lofted the first liquid-fuel missiles in the 1920s), the center holds Model Rocket Launch Contests twice a month. Participants vie for altitude and hang-time records with sophisticated models that can soar hundreds of feet and float gently to Earth via radio-controlled parachutes. At 1 p.m. at the Goddard Space Flight Center’s Visitors’ Center, Greenbelt & Soil Conservation Rds., Greenbelt. FREE. (301) 286-8981. (Greg Kitsock)
