The English Beat has been relegated to ’80s-new-wave compilations, but the intermittent duo of toaster/singer Ranking Roger and guitarist/singer Dave Wakeling have found that the General Public banner is still commercially viable. Operating under that moniker, the pair continues to churn out Anglo-pop with a reggae backbone. Wakeling’s guitar work, while not extraordinary, is a sturdy springboard for Rogers’ vocals: The synergy between the two demonstrates why the pair fare better as a team.
