Quintessential hard-bop trumpeter Lee Morgan, who was killed outside a bar by a jealous lover in 1972, has lately been the subject of renewed interest. An all-star tribute featuring Joe Lovano was recently released, and now Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi weighs in with Free Wheelin’, named after one of Morgan’s punchiest tunes. Morgan’s joyous tone and confident delivery recalled Clifford Brown, and Roditi sounds appropriately incandescent on “The Joker,” a fiery blues number, and Morgan’s 1964 soul-jazz hit “The Sidewinder.” With local chanteuse Maija at 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $16.
