JUNE 23-27 & JUNE 30-JULY 4
Contradicting the conservative view that multiculturalism is antithetical to the American way, the Smithsonian’s Annual Festival of American Folklife has delighted audiences for 29 years with its mix of regional, national, and international arts, crafts, and music. As eclectic as always, this summer’s 10-day celebration showcases unique Cape Verdean, Czech, Native American, and Russian cultures. Highlights include the building of a belfry by Czech carpenters, performances by Russian-American choirs, demonstrations of Cape Verdean cooking, and nightly dance parties featuring styles such as Czech-rooted American polka and Cape Verde/West African coladeira music. From 11 a.m.-9 p.m. June 23- 27 & June 30-July 4 (dance parties from 5:30-7 p.m.; concerts from 7-9 p.m. except July 4) on the National Mall Grounds. FREE. (202) 357-2700. (Steve Kiviat)
