Frontman Ed Ackerson and the other members of Polara are talented practitioners of record-collection rock—the Minneapolis-based band is still trying to assimilate the last seven or so years of Anglo-indie rock that undoubtedly dominate its CD shelves. Elements of My Bloody Valentine’s early, sonic pop ventures (replete with inane lyrics) mingle with the drone of Spacemen 3 and the gadget-obsessed arrangements of Stereolab. Still, Polara’s lead track, “Counting Down,” is vigorous without being overly imitative and the dusty, acoustic folk of “Taupe” underscores the band’s melodic charm. With the scuzzy modern blues ensembles Red Red Meat and Railroad Jerk at 8:15 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. (CP)
