OPENS JUNE 16
One of the grande dames of Hollywood is celebrating her 65th birthday, but she doesn’t look a day over 21. In fact, she looks better now than she has in years—thanks to brand new 35mm prints struck from original and/or restored negatives. The cinefemme fatale is Betty Boop, whose signature “Boop-oop-a-doop” is one of the great euphemisms—in any language, for just about anything. Miss Betty will be exposing her oeuvre in Betty Boop Confidential, a collection of some of the more out-there ‘toons ever made. Everything moves in a Fleischer flick—and to authentic, hot jazz. This program features the likes of Cab Calloway (rendered as a ghost in “Snow White”) and Ethel Merman (live in “You Try Somebody Else”). Watching the trippy “Wanna be a member?” sequence of “Bimbo’s Initiation,” it’s hard to believe that the Fleischer Studios didn’t pass out acid each morning. Several Technicolor ‘toons are included as well. At the Biograph, 2819 M St. NW. (202) 333-2696. (Dave Nuttycombe)
