The 9:30 Club“sidestage” at Republic Gardens hosted its last show May 31. According to I.M.P. booking agent Lisa White, the U Street venue has been sold and is slated to become a sports bar later this summer. Thesidestage project, headed by White, featured bands that hadn’t yet cultivated a large-enough following to appear at the 9:30 proper. Says White, “The tours that come through D.C. are package tours, so there aren’t any opportunities for local bands to jump on. We recognized that there’s a need for some kind of small room for local and national acts to develop.” White is currently searching out a new home for her pet project, and hopes to stay in the U Street area, which she says has been very supportive: “There’s a lot to do, there’s a lot of late-night food places. It has a neighborhood feel.”
