The liner notes to 18th Dye’s Tribute to a Bus describe the Danish/German group’s third release as “very European music.” Tribute does evoke both “You Made Me Realize”-era My Bloody Valentine and the Wedding Present’s Sea Monsters. Yet Steve Albini’s dry production and the trio’s reliance on loud/soft dynamics establish 18th Dye’s stylistic kinship with the slew of stateside noise-pop outfits that appeared in Dinosaur Jr’s wake during the late ’80s. Happily, the band transcends such influences, adopting a self-conscious minimalism that is a welcome anomaly in its genre.
