MATT LABASH’S COVERAGE of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) protest during the showing ofBraveheart was disappointing, to say the least (“Brave Words,” The District Line, 6/2). Labash claimed to be able to detect a transgender person by a “throaty basso” voice. This man obviously never heard Margaret Mead or Bella Abzug speak!

Labash quotes an activist as saying, “I just obey when I come to a protest….I don’t even know why I’m here.” Responsible journalism would require that this speaker be mentioned by name—or was this supposed to be a Bob Woodward-type “deep background”?
