Few bands can claim to have founded an entire genre, but Fairport Convention can. Its 1969 release, Liege and Lief, was the first album devoted entirely to the then-revolutionary blend of traditional British folk music and rock ‘n’ roll. Since then, such artists as Billy Bragg, the Levellers, and Oysterband have taken that concept in new directions. Meanwhile, Fairport Convention has seen many personnel changes, with illustrious names including Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, and the late Sandy Denny passing through its ranks. In concert, the band presents material from all periods of its history, from beloved standards like “Matty Groves” and “Meet on the Ledge” to more recent fare. At 8 p.m at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $15. (703) 549-5919. (Ken Roseman)
