For a band that relies so heavily on sequencers and samplers, Orb is capable of amazingly improvisational-sounding music—as evidenced on its Live ’93, an audacious release for a techno group. As a rule, the British duo tends to billow and build rather than thump and bleep. On Orb’s latest, Orbvs Terrarvm, Alex Paterson has assimilated his influences—which include ’70s German electronic duo Cluster and the mad scratchings of dub pioneer Lee Perry—into a prog-rock/ambient/dance-music hybrid that doesn’t sound nearly as faceless as that of many of his contemporaries. At 9:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 930 F St. NW. $20. (202) 393-0930. (CP)
