Based in Paris for 15-plus years, Zairian-born vocalist Kanda Bongo Man pioneered the current streamlined, high-speed version of soukous that’s kept the shimmering guitar rhythms, but ditched the horn accompaniment and languid traditional rumba arrangements. While this approach has offended African music purists, others, including yours truly, love the nouveau style’s unadorned energy and the flamboyant manner in which Kanda performs it. At 10 p.m. at Kilimanjaro, 1724 California St. NW. $15. (202) 328-3838. (Steve Kiviat)
