WHAT STRUCK ME ABOUT Jonetta Rose Barras’ “Black Hole” (5/19) was how well the piece stood up when I substituted white for black; Gingrich, Gephardt, Dole, and Clinton for Barry and Kelly; AFL-CIO for NAACP; etc.
Today’s politicians serve their cash contributors and assorted cronies, so we get Star Wars, a space station, and removal of environmental regulations instead of Head Start, school lunches, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Little wonder that 60 percent of those eligible don’t vote, city folks deal drugs, rural ones grow them, more work second (or first) jobs for tax-free cash, and some feel the need to blow up government buildings.
The country’s political system and its so-called leaders, both black and white, operate in their own self-interest at the expense of the people they are supposed to represent. Most of the country is hip to the scam, and people have simply begun to work out their own alternatives.
