Better known in Jamaica and the U.K. than here in the States, crooner Al Campbell has been singing roots- and lovers-rock reggae for some 25-plus years. Though it’s not indicated anywhere on the packaging, Natty Too Tall is a reissue of material Campbell originally recorded and released between 1985 and 1987. Campbell applies his relaxed, sophisticated vocals to songs whose subject matter includes everything from Rastafarian pride (“Forward Natty”) to British racism (“National Front”) to romance (“Bring Back the Love”). While it’s a bit wearying to listen to the disc’s 20 tracks straight through, there’s a slew of cleverly composed, sweetly sung compositions here that deserve attention.
