I admit it, I’m an art snob. The kind that routinely judges CDs by their covers. But I’m grateful that I looked past the generic lounge-singer head-shot that graces the Lynne Arriale Trio‘s When You Listen. Appearances to the contrary, Arriale is an extremely graceful pianist who evokes both Bill Evans and Horace Silver. Her soft touch on standards like Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is the Ocean” and George Gershwin’s “Bess, You Is My Woman Now” allows bassist Drew Gross and drummer Steve Davis plenty of breathing room. And though the three don’t approach the telepathic interplay of the great Evans/Motian/LaFarro trio, Gross and Davis are much more than mere accompanists. Listen is full of inspired interplay that should shine even more brightly live. At 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at One Step Down, 2517 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. $12.50. (202) 331-8863. (Chip Porter)
