CHUCK SHEPHERD REPLIES: If deaf parents believe —for themselves—that the joy of “deaf culture” outweighs the joy of “hearing,” that is not weird and not any of my business.
However, because I personally am fortunate enough to be able to hear, I know for a fact that hearing allows me countless and profoundly wonderful experiences every day of my life, and I think it is weird that a parent seemingly would prefer that his or her child never even have the choice of whether to experience those joys.
